Although sci-fi stories belie the fact, I believe that space will not be a
battleground for most people. No denying that there will be a military
presence (we can't seem to shake old habits), but most people in space will
be doing their job, worrying about their families, mortgages, super bowl
games, taxes, and the like of "What's for dinner?" issues. To that end I
posed the ridiculous: Liquid gas from everyday gas pumps, squeege window
washing, and products of today in an unlikely environment. The backdrop is
an image from the web which was toned down in PS (removing nebulae as too
busy for the image), the moon is a sphere with moon image map from the net,
and a bump map, and clip map done in PS. There are four spots at the
corners of the overhang illuminating sign, and at 60 deg (soft shadows at
60 also...I tried setting lights at a more realistic no soft shadows due to
no atmospheric dispersion, but it just didn't look good) hitting under the
overhang as well. Two linear lights are set under the overhang stretched
to nearly the length of the overhang on either side of the pump island. A
small lens flare and red point light with red glow are set on the backpacks
of the attendants. A spotlight is set on the face of the facing attendant.
Although you can't see it well, there's a lawnmower pull starter on the
"Binford Air-o-matic" backpacks as well. All the objects are my creation,
image was rendered on a DEC Alpha, 300 mhz, 128 ram, set at print
resolution enhanced med AA in 15 hrs 2 min, brought into PS, resized and
resampled to get under the 100k limit. A test image using 720x480,
enhanced medium AA, with I think better field of view, rendered on the DEC
in 25 min 30 sec at 162k. The net images are from:
