"Waldo Whale"
My entry for "The Beauty of Flight" is my conceptualization of the Waldo
Whales described in the Sci-Fi Novel Sundiver by David Brin. The Waldo
Whales in the book were primarily for swimming, but were also capable of
short, non-sustained flight. The entire image is 100% Lightwave, made in
Lightwave 3D 5.6c. The model took 8 hours of work and the Layout work took
12 hours to get steamer working (I was just learning that one, and I was
having difficulty following the tutorial in the manual), setting up the IK
and parent information for all the objects, setting all the surfaces to make
them look right, and running various test renders, etc. The water is a
large, multi-segmented, tripled rectangle with a fractal bumps displacement
map applied on it. The sun in the image is the primary light source with a
lens flare. The background colors are the sky, zenith, ground, and nadir
settings from the effects menu. Hopefully, this image will become part of a
larger project that I am working on for David Brin.
