In orbit around the home world of the Star Kingdom of Manticore, the H.M.S. Fearless enjoys a moment of peace. Nearby, her sister ship glides, ready to take on anything the Havenite Navy is willing to launch her way.

The Fearless was designed to resemble the ship described in the series of books, by SF author David Weber, in his Honor Harrington series of novels. The Fearless is a Star Knight class heavy cruiser, 1200 metres long, with a mass of 300,000 tons.

The actual Lightwave model itself was completed over the course of a month or so last year, and was completely retextured early this year in an attempt to improve the realism of the ship. It weighs in at just under 250,000 polygons, and has about 10 Mb of image maps. In this scene, the ship was rendered with 7 raytracing area lights, and two copies of the ship. Rendering time grew so high I decided to render out separate elements and composite them back together in Photoshop, which would also allow greater control of the separate elements. Each ship took about 3 hours to render. Both the Earth and nebula/stars were existing images obtained from the NASA web site, though they were both manipulated heavily in Photoshop.

This image has been done in layers due to the vast amount of polygons in the scene and me only having 64 megabytes of RAM =) All elements are Lightwave and of course everything is done by me. Not one of the objects in this scene qualifies to the LW 65535 point limit so the ship is actually built up of 3 different parts. and the Station is about 40 objects.
