    "Blood Bath"

Inspired by makeup artists like Rick Baker and Tom Savini. Blood Bath was something I thought of doing while I was in the shower. The image was modeled and textured off and on(between the job and home) over a period of a little over a week. Everything in the scene started from scratch and modeled with Metanurbs and a few other assorted goodies from Lightwave version 5.6. The only plug-ins used on the piece were in Layout with Realitools. I can't say enough about the importance of layering textures as I used multiple procedural and bitmaps together to get the look I wanted. All texture work done in Photoshop. Total time to render was around 29 min. on my slug-like StarMax 180 Power Macintosh clone.

    "Strangler"

To me, there's nothing uglier than a man's murderous impulse against another - and nothing more frightening than what's known to really exist. I'd toyed with creating some sort of alien, creepy crawler or man-beast, but I found it difficult to match the type of emotion found in the human eyes, and to get that depraved, almost gleeful anticipation of murder. Moreover, the strangler uses the most familiar weapon to us all; I wanted the viewer to feel the fingertips.

Technical stuff: There's sparingly little trickery in this image. Modeled and rendered in Lightwave, with elements comped in After Effects to accommodate my compositing addiction. The DOF was faked in AE (for no particular reason) with a compound blur based on z-buffer information. Most textures are just planar maps, some via close encounters with a scanner. Maps were fiddled with a bit in photoshop, with basic procedurals used to add some randomness. About 100 bones are used to deform the head, and about 30 in each hand. I found it tough to compose the shot, to get the eyes large enough in the frame while catching the hands - all while adhering to image size rules. Regardless, it was a welcome diversion from seemingly endless demo reel work.

    "Lost"

I'm not sure if this bloke would be considered ugly, whichthe topic says it should be, but think of it this way: If yourgirlfriend looked like this she would probably be consideredugly. Anyway, I think he looks a bit halloweenish so I guess he'llfit in.

The image took 29 minutes to render on a dual P2-450 with 512Mb ofRAM. The creature's 10 different textures are all handpainted andtake up an amount of 28 Mb RAM. Steamer was used to create thevolumetric lights, Skytracer was used as well although I'm notsure it's visible in the final render. Treedruid was used to createthe pines, and finally Photoshop roughed it up.
